Client: Shell Gas Terminal, Co. Mayo, Ireland

Scope of work: A Є3 bn. Investment by Shell was threatened by closure following release of peat (250 NTU) and aluminium rich clay (50 mgl-1) into Carrowmore Lake.

Solution: Surface water was collected in a tailings pond and treated by ECR, flocculation and settlement (radial clarifier). Treated water had to comply
UK drinking water standard.

Comments: Original plant was built to last 12 months – it still operates 24/7 at peak flow rates of 1.5 Mld-1 achieving <200 µl-1 Al3+ in treated water. The plant will be upgraded 2011 to include new ECR units and operated until start 2014.
